Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is the biggest weapons manufacturer in America. He is a genius and billionaire. On a trip to the middle east to show off a new missile he is captured by terrorists who want him to build them the missile for them. While imprisoned he builds a high tech armor and escapes. When he gets back to America he decides to give up building weapons and becomes the superhero Iron Man. The special effects for Iron Man are amazing especially in the flight scenes. The acting is great especially because of the witty dialogue. I definitely recommend this because it is a pretty sweet summer blockbuster and a great action movie.

MPAA Rating:

PG-13 for some intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, and brief suggestive content.

Spider-Man 2

Spider-Man 2 is an awesome sequel that picks up two years after the first movie. Peter is struggling keeping in control between his two identities. His love is engaged to someone else, his once amazing grades are now slipping, and his best friend wants to kill Spider Man. Also there is a new villian Doc Ock(Alfred Molina), a brilliant scientist, who in an experiment gone wrong ended up with eight crazy metal arms that basically control him. This movie had great special effects that improve on the first movies and the fight scenes are really crazy. The story is brilliant and the acting is great as well. It’s a truly great sequel and definitely check it out.

Spider-Man

Of any comic book heroes spider-man is definitely coolest in my book. Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is the local nerd who lives with his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York. He is in love with the girl next door Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst). On a field trip he gets bitten by an experimented on spider and receives special powers. He uses his powers and becomes the hero of New York although not everyone loves him. Peter’s best friend Harry’s father (Willem Defoe) becomes the psychopathic Green Goblin and it is up to Spider Man to save the day. Spider-Man is a super fun movie with cool special effects and just a good story. The actors do a great job and the movie transitions seemlessly between the action, comedy, and dramatic moments. This movie is also build on great morals and it shows all the movie through. “With great power comes great responsibility.” I highly recommend this movie to anyone who has not seen it, if there even is anyone who hasn’t.

Cinderella Man

Cinderella Man is the inspiring true story about James Braddock a boxer during the Great Depression. Braddock (Russell Crowe) is a down and out has been barely getting by, and trying to support his family. He goes every day to the docks looking for work and sometimes gets a fight at night. Braddock gets back into boxing and trains to fight Max Baer the champ who has previously killed two men in the ring. This movie is superb in almost every way. The story is gripping and amazing, the acting is brilliant, and the boxing in intense and very real. This movie has a lot of heart and I highly recommend it.

The Day After Tomorrow

People rant and rave about global warming destroying the environment. In The Day After Tomorrow it really does when it causes a ton of natural disasters followed by the earth freezing. Dennis Quaid plays climatologist Jack Hall who knows somthing bad is coming because of the polar ice caps melting or something like that. He warns people but nobody really believes him. His seventeen year old son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is in New York on a school trip at this time. When the crazy weather starts he is trapped there. Jack promises to brave the storm and come for Sam. The overall plot for The Day After Tomorrow is unbelievable and somewhat dumb but it’s alright for a disaster movie. The actors do an okay job but nothing that stands out. The main selling point for the movie are the effects and seeing people basically in peril from the weather. It does have its entertaining moments, but they really don’t make the movie. If you are a huge fan of disaster movies like Twister then you will probably really like this but if not then its the type of movie that is okay the first time watching but really has nothing special to it.

War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds is a sci-fi alien invasion flick. It is very loosely based on the H.G. Wells novel of the same name. Tom Cruise plays Ray Ferrier a divorced dad who takes his kids one weekend. During this weekend ALIENS ATTACK!! They come down in a lightning storm and pilot huge tripods that vaporize everybody in their paths. Ray’s loose plan is to get the kids to safety then take them back to their mother. His son hates him and he doesn’t really know his daughter. Over the course of the movie they bond. Dakota Fanning plays his daughter and does a good job acting but is super annoying with her screaming for like the first half of the movie. Cruise also has an execptionally good performance. They work well together and while action is not going on they move the movie along. The main point of the movie though should be the special effects and the alien action. There are huge explosions and people vaporized. The effects are great and the action is intense, but only shortly. There are many boring parts and there wasn’t enough focus on the aliens. Also the ending came too abruptly, but it’s still a good popcorn flick.

The Patriot

The Patriot occurs in America during the war for her independence. Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), a former hero of the French and Indian War, a widower and father of seven hopes to shelter his family form the Revolutionary War. His attempts are made useless when his oldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) enlists in the colonial army to battle the Brits. Eventually Gabriel returns home wounded but also so does a cold hearted British colonel who murders Martin’s second child and takes Gabriel prisoner. Benjamin then joins into the fight and forms a militia. Everything in the patriot just seems to fit well together. The acting, the battles, the sets, the costumes, the cinematography and the music, all blend to make this a very compelling movie. I highly recommend it if you are into war movies at all, and if not then you should still check it out.

The Invasion

The Invasion is the fourth movie adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel The Body Snatchers. I personally have not read the book or seen any of the other versions of the movie so I don’t know how true this holds to the original, but in my opinion this is a decent movie. A space shuttle crashes with a mysterious substance on it. It turns out that the alien gunk is an intelligent creature and when it goes into humans and they sleep they become basically empty shells of themselves with no emotion execpt the instinct to turn others into empty shells as well. Eventually those with the alien disease die out. The main character Carol Bennell (Nicole Kidman) and her friend Ben Driscoll (Daniel Craig) discover the truth about the epidemic and try to find a cure. Overall the suspense is there with a few jumpy scenes, car chases, and tense moments. Also the acting is decent but thats about all the movie has going for it. It’s not that there is much that I truly dislike about the movie but there’s not alot of things that are original and super interesting. I recommend this movie but I am Legend is a much better thriller although this is worth checking out as well.

Deja Vu

Déjà Vu is defined as the experience of feeling sure that one has witnessed or experienced a new situation previously (an individual feels as though an event has already happened or has repeated itself). Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) experiences a situation somewhat like this when a ferry explodes killing hundreds of people. Doug an ATF agent is tasked with helping in the investigation, but this is no ordinary case. The government has created technology so advanced that they can see four days exactly into the past at the same moment in the past. That may seem confusing but the movie explains it pretty well. Deja Vu is an intense movie with some good although anticipated plot twists. Denzel Washington does a great job acting as usual along with the rest of the cast. In my book Deja Vu is altogether a solid thriller with some neat ideas and is worthy of a viewing.

Red Eye

Red Eye is a light thriller that stars Rachel McAdams as a hotel manager named Lisa Reisert. She has a fear of flying but has to because of a death in the family. One the trip back from the funeral while delayed for a flight to Miami she meets the creepy but seemingly nice Jackson (Cillian Murphey) and talks with him. They end up sitting beside each other on the plane, but once they take off he becomes a whole new person. He is plotting to kill some high ranked guy in the government and has to have her help doing it. If she refuses then her father will be killed. The movie is pretty exciting even though most of it takes place on the plane and the acting is great. I would definately recommend this movie.
